Frozen in Frame

Frozen in Frame is a collection of stop motion animations composed of both hand- and laser-cut black paper. Each frame traces elements of our living world that are bound to shift. Tracing has been used as a way to document silhouettes, to preserve a memory or identity, to make something permanent, and to pinpoint where we are in the world and where we are not. These pieces of cut paper grew from attempts to outline the shadows of plants falling on the pages of my sketchbook. I trace the tension between the act of making a static image from the living world and the life within the lines themselves. I am building a story that can change as I move from one mark, cut, or frame to the next. Small gestures accumulate into sweeping currents. These stories hold my own frustrating impulse to record and a curiosity created by trying to trace something in motion.

Each title is a note from my sketchbook as I attempted to trace.
